Recovering our Nonviolent Discipleship: A Second Chance for the Church
July 19 - 24, 2010
Presenter: Terrence Rynne
The Theology Institute of 2010 explores the practice of nonviolence by Martin Luther King and Mohandas Gandhi in relationship to Jesus’ teaching on the kingdom of God and the way that he confronted the “powers that be” of his time. King once wrote, “…the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If today’s church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning.” Their lives also demonstrate how the nonviolence of the Sermon on the Mount, far from being dreamy idealism can be politically effective.
